Since Story Mode uses a defined set of characters, Free Play is your opportunity to pick any character you'd like and use their unique abilities to get to previously unreachable areas. While Story mode is fairly linear and points you to specific areas, Free Play allows you to explore more thoroughly and removes all cutscenes and story prompts. Each level will only be available in Story mode during your initial playthrough, with Free Play unlocked after you've beaten the level once. It's especially important to keep track of character abilities as you explore in Free Play mode (and trust us, you'll be doing a lot of that). After you beat the story section where you met them, these characters will be walking through The Port, the game's hub world. Most characters that you interact with during the story are also playable, but they must be purchased with studs. In typical Lego game fashion, every single one of them is playable.Īny character you control during Story Mode will be unlocked automatically at the end of their level. This means that during the course of Story Mode, you'll interact with nearly one hundred different characters as you make your way through the campaign.
