Since Story Mode uses a defined set of characters, Free Play is your opportunity to pick any character you'd like and use their unique abilities to get to previously unreachable areas. While Story mode is fairly linear and points you to specific areas, Free Play allows you to explore more thoroughly and removes all cutscenes and story prompts. Each level will only be available in Story mode during your initial playthrough, with Free Play unlocked after you've beaten the level once.
